Black Mask is the alias of Roman Sionis, a notorious Gotham City crime lord. He first appeared in Batman #386 (August 1985).
Born into a wealthy, superficial family with ties to the Wayne family, Roman harbored resentment towards them and, by extension, Bruce Wayne. His inherited cosmetic company, Janus Cosmetics, floundered due to poor management and Wayne Enterprises' superior products, leading to bankruptcy. Driven to madness, he blamed Bruce Wayne for his misfortunes.
His descent into villainy began when he murdered his parents and donned a mask carved from his father's ebony casket. The mask became a permanent fixture, melding with his skin after a confrontation with Batman. As Black Mask, he rose to power through violence and intimidation, establishing himself as a formidable leader of Gotham's underworld. He's known for his sadistic tendencies, a penchant for torture, and the use of masks to exert control over his followers.
